Saturday, April 4 Workshops:
"Layering 101"
12:30-2:30pm :: $35 per class or $60 for both pre-reg /$40 per class at door
Learn the basics and concepts in the art of layering. With the tools and knowledge you learn in this workshop you will be on the way to becoming a pro. The class will cover specific techniques to overcome the difficulties that arise when trying to layer, along with different drills to accompany the technique. At the end of class a short combination will be taught that includes layering, of course! Be prepared to challenge your brain and bring a notebook. When you leave the workshop I promise you will want to add a shimmy to everything you do.
"The Slow & Subtle"
3:00 - 5:00pm :: $35 per class or $60 for both pre-reg /$40 per class at door
This workshop will focus on slowing down and integrating the core to initiate those slow, gooey movements. The warm-up is yogalates based and will concentrate on core, balance, and strengthening exercises that will be applied to the dance form. In the workshop students will drill various slow movements focusing on the core and learn how making subtle changes to the simple movements translates to noticeable beauty. Students will also learn Steven's Atash Mayan stylized gooey combinations that can be used in an improvisational situation or in choreography.

I had to wait to make sure I was better after having the plague this month. So grateful to be able to breathe again today.

Steven impressed the hell out of everyone, including me.
I have to say it's pretty outrageous that San Diegans are so apathetic/lazy/unwilling to invest in dance/taking him for granted that his classes aren't making it at Culture Shock and are being cut.
What is wrong with our dance community?
Where is everyone?
Do your best to catch him now before his European tour takes him away from us this year, anyway.

Sun, April 5, 2009 - 10:16 AMAgreed! I'm not quite sure what's going on down there. Classes seem to be being cut left and right. I always thought it was sad that I was the only student that could find time to make it down to my San Diego classes regularily- yeah with a full time job, small child, and 3 hr drive. But you can't keep classes going for just one person- no matter how much I wish that was so. Well, Steven, I loved your classes and performance. I'll be back for more! Thank you!
