Searching for New Venue

topic posted Mon, May 5, 2008 - 9:43 AM by  offlineRick
We’re looking for another venue for to replace the now defunct Gypsy Night at the Otherside Cafe - just a place to dance and offer dancers the experience of performing in public without prejudiced of their gender or degree of experience because it is a paid gig. One place we are planning to look into is Twiggs coffeehouse on Park Blvd. If anyone has experience with Twiggs or has scouted Twiggs as a venue let me or Sabrina know because we will be going there soon.

Just to let you know, Gypsy Night was never a paid gig... only what we could shake loose from the audience...I have had some experience with Twiggs and there are noise restrictions due to the apartments upstairs...

Right, just a place where anybody who wanted could come and dance - not like a paid gig where looks, experience, and gender can determine who gets to dance.

And thanks for the tip about noise restrictions at Twiggs. Maybe really heavy drumming would have to be curtailed - or maybe after such and such time. It's a question that we will be sure to ask.

Apartments upstairs, damn that is important to take into account, but there are a million cafes in San diego that are uncharted territory.

Please post possible locations here if you would like, and along with that, we shoud bring up an ediquette standard as performers. The cafe and resturant owners have a right to restrict us due to certain image concerns. As a performer learning that "reality" is a great skin thickining skill that all performers need if they want to get out there as professionals. So even if you find a place that just seeks out dancers with three legs and nothing else please feel free tp post it. There are more dancers than known oppurtunities to dance in S.D. I hate to see good talent rotting because they are just waiting to get paid. Remember you also have to be seen to be known and sometimes that means a free show here and there, just dont give them the whole farm leave them wanting more, make them want to hire you to see more. Short sweet shows and the length of time should depend on how many dancers are wanting to dance and one person should commit to handling that like what I did for Cafe LuLu Once upon a time. If you find a location manage it WELL or pass it on to someone who will.

So Please post location possibilities here, and lets begin a new thread on professional conduct by performing artists who are choosing to do a free show for the sake of exp or self promotion.
