TWO AMAZING WORKSHOPS:
Atash Maya Dark and Sexy Choreo :: 12:30 pm-2:30 pm
Atash Maya has been known for their edgy and sexually powerful style: Dark gothic stylized choreography ~ combos for your not so traditional performances. This is an advanced choreography including floorwork, a slow drop from standing, layered techniques both fast and slow, and fast spot turns. The choreography has been broken down into 3 combos for Improvisational stylized belly dance. All Level dancers are welcome to attend, but beginners please allow yourself time to journal and observe techniques before trying if needed.

Slow and Sweet Stylized Combos :: 3:00 pm-5:00 pm
Sabrina will teach 2-4 Slow and Sweet Tribal fusion combos. Each combo will be an 8 count of 8 phrases that can be easily applied to your favorite music, used in solo or group Improvisational dance, developed choreography, or home practice. Every technique within the combos will be clearly broken down and drilled until comfortably understood. Students will also be given a handout describing each combo clearly. Keep in mind Slow is more challenging than rhythmic, bring a notebook you will need it. This is an Intermediate to advanced level workshop, dancers will gain tremendous ability and insight from this workshop. Please don’t forget your yoga mat!

Performance. To pay or not to pay!? As usual I have a lot to say

IMO Paying to perform is not cool... I think it is due to supply an demand, we know a festival would be lame without dancers but if there are too many dancers then it is to the festivals profit to regulate it somehow, the worst part is that dancers are asking other dancers to pay to perform WTF???.

Unfortunately many dancers don't perform because of this and more power to them but it is not going to do anything unless all the dancers pull together and refuse to support this stupid idea. Unknowingly or not it was the first dancer that paid to dance that made this rule work. We know especially as beginning dancers the lust to perform can absolutely override Intel. But as seasoned dancers and new dancers with the right advice, if we all just stopped paying to perform and pulled together then something will be done to support what the festivals are there for, the last time I checked is was to support the dancers not cause them even more dancer debt ;).

This lame stunt is still in it's beginning stages and I believe there is time to stop it if we are aware of how much it hurts the community. Not only that if a festival is asking you as a performer to pay as a performer than chances are not many people are going to show up to the festival to see ya. They are likely squeezing money out of the dancers for a low attendance reason, and that's a clear sign not to perform.

Along with this There should be a limit to how many dancers can dance, professional and student time slots, and also a bit more pressure to sign up early to dance if you are interested not just depending on how much cash you drop or who you know.

Also a reward system to those dancers that do more for the dance community as a whole not just show up to dance 10 minutes before collect their reward and leave. Supporters of the community those who are there in charity to help the event, vender's, and workshop teachers should get first dibs on time, and day of performance slots and that would encourage more organization for the shows, I believe regulation is badly needed not making dancers pay.

In the meantime we should really do our best not to support the "pay to dance rule" that is all levels of fucked up to me, dancers should not ever have to pay to perform.

The other side of this coin. Dancers should always have to pay to see their fellow dancers perform and show support for the community in a way that keeps the dancers getting paid, especially since it is the dancers that come to see the dancers as a majority. We need to plan to drop at least 5.00 to support them and the event, if it is a free show then plan to tip 5.00!! everyone knows nothing is free, and if it is free for you then that means someone else is paying for you one way or another. When folks bitch about paying to see a fellow dancer and then drop a 20 at the bar they are doing no one any good, they should just go home and get their big head out - the - way of the supporter that dropped a 20 to see the show.

An ethical dancers Union should be formed by a collective that has interest in protecting the dancers from getting shafted, maybe now is a time for all of us to pull together and create this for eachother or at least create some boundaries for an art that is no small change to learn.

More support for the arts and the artists, not profit for the those that are feeding on the dancers. If the money is going to the right places to begin with the festivals WILL profit, lets fix this.

About that new class.

Ok so the Date the class begins is June 12th, Thursdays from 7:30-9:30 directly following the 6:30-7:30 C.S. drills class in the same room. The Yoga and Choreo class will go for 6 weeks.

If you prepay cannot attend all the classes I will be happy to work it out with ya so you are getting a fair exchange and oppurtunity to perform. This class will be exclusive to preregistered students please E-mail me for Session cards, I am opening this class up to all my students I know you are all up on the FCBD ATS as far as I need you to be, thank you for working so hard.

E-mail me at Atashmaya@yahoo.com or talk to me in class about details and getting your spot. This class is only open to 15 of you so stake your claim quick. You will not be required to buy costumes there will be no surprise costs other than the class card to take the session, also there will be no filming or inactive observation of this class.

If you need to drop classes in order to take this one I suggest you Keep the World Beat Center Tribal Improv class, you cannot top live drums!

Outside of your class card all you need is a Yoga Mat, water, dance journal, a snack for the ride home, and a smile.

The level of this class is advanced it will be just like the City Bally yoga / choreography sessions we held last year. No dancer is restricted from this class and with that said I am not responsible for you not taking your body's warnings seriously, Trust your pace I will respect your limit and give plenty of options.
Performance at the end of the session is not required, You only perform if you want too.

p.s. I understand budget constraints so if you would like to begin the class session and pay in three parts thats fine too, anything to keep you dancing and me teaching. xo!

New classes in June WOOHOO!!!

YAY! I am so happy to announce we got the spot at CS on Thursday evenings beginning June. The Yoga and choreography class will be from 7:30-9:30pm right after the Drills class at 6:30. As soon as I organize my thoughts after this whirrrr of exitement I will post the details.

What I do know This is a pre-registration 6 week session in Yoga and dance choreography not through Culture shock but held at the Culture shock studio.
I am so exited, it will be just like old times :)
Water, mats, journals are a must.

Also on Wednesday morning I will be guiding a Yoga class from 9:30-10:45 am.

I will have the post here on tribe with all the delicious details by Monday.

Searching for New Venue

We’re looking for another venue for to replace the now defunct Gypsy Night at the Otherside Cafe - just a place to dance and offer dancers the experience of performing in public without prejudiced of their gender or degree of experience because it is a paid gig. One place we are planning to look into is Twiggs coffeehouse on Park Blvd. If anyone has experience with Twiggs or has scouted Twiggs as a venue let me or Sabrina know because we will be going there soon.

If you did'nt see my posting in the Gypsy Night thread, the OtherSide Coffeehouse has a new name, Filter, and (apparently) a new owner.

Laura responded to my posting with the fact that she didn't like the direction the new owner wanted to take the place, so Gypsy Night has been cancelled. (You don't have to believe me, just check the posting in the GN thread)

I know a lot of people from AM had performed at that place. Just wanted to give the necessary heads-up on this.

We Did It!!!

Melodia, Raine and I completed our Yoga Teacher Training, and rocked it!
Our last day was the 20th yesterday, So now we are official..whatever that means...

I am going for my CPR training and insurance next weekend and then I will be ready to make everyone pass out leagally.. whatever that means too.. ;)

Choreography Class the Wednesday

The Fusion Choreography class this wednesday night at Café India will be a special 2 hour class. If you can only stay for the normal 1 hour thats totally fine you will get a full normal class's worth. A few people have requested a 2 hour class so I'm going to try it this week and see how it works out.

The second hour will focus on Mostly review and repetition and detail. While the 1st hour will be the normal drilling, learn a couple new 8 counts and a quick review of the whole thing.

$10.00 for 1 hour
$ 20.00 for 2 hours

I will get to come down there for work again and can't wait to take classes from Sabrina. I missed it so much and all the lovely people I met when I went back to Washington. I get to come down for 5 months this time. I saw that there is a series starting in May and don't want to jump in to that midway, but wanted to know what is coming up in starting in June. I get there June 2nd and can't wait to get started again. Also if you suggest any props I should bring. I forgot my sword last year, but will bring it this year.

Did you know that some events pay performers based on how much of their fan base comes out to see them? Yes, really! If you walk in and say you are there to see Atash Maya, they can finally make a few bucks for a gig. Very unusual to make money for dancing.

Don't let her give you a free class card just for going to this party. The card is worth more than the cover charge and much more than she will make for dancing that night. So if you refuse it outright, and insist on actually paying her for teaching her classes instead, she might finally get to have some prosperity in her life. That would be a nice change.

If you accept a free class card just for attending a great party, you are letting her continue to believe that handing out a cash equivalent to her friends as a bribe is acceptable. Do not let Fox continue to refuse success completely by taking money out of her own pocket that she doesn't even have. Help a betch pay for her broken-down-for-the-millionth-time car, the yoga teacher training that she has put so much of her heart into, and the thousands of dollars in bills that pile up and up and up since she makes almost nothing being a dancer or a teacher.

If you want the class card, just pay her for it. Add a tip to spite her. Her teaching is phenomenal, and worth much more than she charges.

Or buy one of the class cards she will give away to someone who cannot afford it. Giving away your money to artists is an important way to create peace in the world.

Bring cash with you. Tip liberally. The universe will thank you by multiplying your wealth. I guarantee it.

It is about freaking time for someone to let Sabrina know that her extraordinary talent and brilliant energy are valued and valuable.

Enough with the starving artist thing already. So boring!

6:30-7:30 A.T.S. Tonight is Turkish with arms / half turn and full turn, and then a review of last weeks Arabic shimmy with arms, turn and line switches. Please remember to bring your zil's, I will remember to bring mine :) Keep in mind tonights class is the Int/adv class from Cafe India. If this is your first class ever I strongly suggest the beginning A.T.S. and cardio shimmy drills on Thursday's from 6:30-7:30 at Culture shock.

After the A.T.S. class tonight stick around for Stevens yummy combos and fusion drills from 7:30 -8:30 same room right after mine, a jolly good time. I will be taking the class right along with you, weeeeewhooooo!

Coming Early May! Wednesdays 7-9:30 pm Yoga and Fusion choreography 4-6 week sessions ending in performance.

Classes will be 4-6 week sessions, each class will be a progression of techniques and or choreography.

If you are feeling creatively stumped, not challenged in your reg classes? or maybe you have hit a stalemate in strength or technique. I promise, this will fix that. :)

Raine Melodia and I are in Teacher training for our Yoga Alliance Certification.
In case we seem very unavailable, tired, or no attending events we would normally be attending it is because we are having our ass beaten and then handed to us on a sweaty yoga mat.

Our Sat from 1-5 Sundays from 12-7, every day for three hours at some random point of the day and then Wednesdays from 5pm-10:30pm... If you see us on one of those days it is because we are playing hooky or just love you outside of that expect nothing till after 4/20 ;)

Engaging the Core - Slow and Slinky

Dive into a jar of molasses! In this workshop, we will deepen our slow, ooey-gooey moves to achieve that slinky, sultry, intoxication look and feel of Tribal Bellydance. Drawing from yoga, pilates, feldenkrais, and Deb’s personal ‘stash”, this workshop will focus on core integration, spinal articulation, and building the foundational strength and flexibility in the hips, spine, and shoulders to directly support controlled, snake-like dancing; create ‘floating upper body’ dance posture for stage; and enage in healthy backbending and lay-backs to save your low back. All this will be applied to bellydance technique, and juicy fusion combos and choreography. She has often been coined the ‘Queen of slink”. Come learn Deb’s unique tribal stylization.

Enhance and deepen your understanding of belly dance fundamentals with technique drills and tribal fusion combos. We will cover layering, shimmies, and up-tempo movements, great for any style of belly dance. Debra Rubin, MA, CMT, RYT has been a life-long dancer and performer, trained and proficient in many styles. Rose Harden is a founding member of Barbary Coast Shakedown, and a pioneering staple in the world-famous San Francisco tribal fusion scene, asthetic, and dance form. Rose has performed, taught, and traveled with Ultra Gypsy Dance Theater throughout the United States and Europe until Spring, 2008. In the past 3 years as co-director of Ultra Gypsy she has been a contributing force in the company’s dynamic choreography, and innovative costuming. As a performing member of Ultra Gypsy for over 7 years, her style is influenced by Jill Parker and inspired by the diversity of the San Francisco BayArea performance community.

Rose also performs with the Cyclecide Bike Rodeo and The Lifesize Mousetrap. When she is not performing, Rose manages Rosehips Designs, her costuming and clothing company. Her background in dance and movement includes Afro-Haitian, Brazilian, Afro-Arabic, West African, Contemporary dance, Fire dance, Pilates, Yoga, and multiple Middle Eastern dance forms. She has danced with Ultra Gypsy since 1999 and is an accredited teacher in the Jill Parker format.

Over 7 years of performing and teaching with Ultra Gypsy and her newest project, the Barbary Coast Shakedown, have given her unique insight to sharing the essentials of great technique, dynamic presence and the joy of this dance form.

The warm summer days at Kosmos Camp are filled with music and dance workshops. Dancers learn and perform on finished dance floors, with wall mirrors in the main lodge. Musicians enjoy instruction and practice opportunities in our open-air venues. What do i do now?

I moved to SD a while ago and now I am marrying my Fiance who is in the navy. Over the past couple months I was dancing with Marjhani of Oojahm in Upland. I auditioned for her faire time tribe and got a call back when some other girls dropped. I went to rehursals every week but it being so far away and me driving a hearse is cost $120 a week just to drive there and back. The day before Build for faire I got a call letting me know that I was being let go.

I don't want to loose the dancing skills I have ( which are minimal at best). I would love to keep learning ATS, Tribal, and basic belly dance. I see the classes update but the times and locations seem to be all over the place and not made all that clear in exactly when they will be starting. Which classes would be best?

Tuesday Culture shock Update.

Not this Tuesday but next Tuesday April 8 Culture Shock will be the new location for the ATS class. So we are moving from Cafe India to Culture shock NEXT week, I will remind you all in class.

If anyone has class cards left Use them up this Tuesday or save them for the Monday World beat center class (PLease bring an additional 2.00 for the drummers) Unfourtunately after 8 weeks I do not offer card refunds.
You are welcome to save them for the Wednesday Fusion classes that will begin again in May.

Culture shock classes are 12.00 drop in or 80.00 for 8 classes, Sorry there is no guest or Barter list.

Tribal SDstyle and Urban Tribal present Deb & Rose in San Diego!

On April 10, 2008, Urban Tribal presents Rose Harden and Deb Rubin, formerly of Ultra Gypsy, along many other amazing dancers for an evening extravaganza at Kava Lounge located at 2812 Kettner Blvd. San Diego, CA 92101. Doors open at 8PM. Show starts at 8:30PM. Cover charge: $5 per person.

On April 12, 2008, Tribal SDstyle presents two workshops with the never before seen combined forces of Deb and Rose's ground breaking and core shaking Core Integration for Belly Dance, applied to phenomenal tribal technique and new stylized fusion choreography. Deb' Workshop: Engaging the Core: Slow and Slinky

Dive into a jar of molasses! In this workshop, we will deepen our slow, ooey-gooey moves to achieve that slinky, sultry, intoxication look and feel of Tribal Bellydance. Drawing from yoga, pilates, feldenkrais, and Deb’s personal ‘stash”, this workshop will focus on core integration, spinal articulation, and building the foundational strength and flexibility in the hips, spine, and shoulders to directly support controlled, snake-like dancing; create ‘floating upper body’ dance posture for stage; and enage in healthy backbending and lay-backs to save your low back. All this will be applied to bellydance technique, and juicy fusion combos and choreography. She has often been coined the ‘Queen of slink”. Come learn Deb’s unique tribal stylization.

Rocking the Core
Enhance and deepen your understanding of belly dance fundamentals with technique drills and tribal fusion combos. We will cover layering, shimmies, and up-tempo movements, great for any style of belly dance. This exciting Tribal Fusion workshop will include Rose's signature Core Integration material focused on building flexibility and targeted muscle group conditioning to improve your dancing. You will also learn a short choreography that highlights Rose's dynamic approach to contemporary belly dance.

Deb's Bio:
Debra Rubin, MA, CMT, RYT has been a life-long dancer and performer, trained and proficient in many styles. She has been a 5+year core performer, choreographer, and teacher with the ground-breaking, trend-setting Ultragypsy Bellydance Theater, until Fall, 2007, and a regular sub for Jill Parker’s classes. She has also studied from, performed with, and been majorly influenced by: Zoe Jakes, Mardi Love, Rose Harden, Mira Betz, Liz Strong, and Rachel Brice. Currently, Deb teaches and performs around the Bay area and beyond. She is seeped in rock solid Tribal technique, while also pushing the creative edge of exploration and fusion, to create her own grounded, unique performance and teaching style. A holistic health counselor, yoga teacher, and integrative bodyworker, Deb is also the founder of SattyaBodyHealingArts and Dance Collective. She teaches classes, workshops, and retreats fusing women’s health and empowerment with yoga, tribal bellydance, nature, and creative expression. Deb has taught at Kosmos world music and dance camp, at the Omega Institute in NY, and at festivals and healing conferences around the globe. Most recently, she is assisting Rachel Brice in her 5-day March Las Vegas intensive.

Rose's Bio:
Rose Harden is a founding member of Barbary Coast Shakedown, and a pioneering staple in the world-famous San Francisco tribal fusion scene, asthetic, and dance form. Rose has performed, taught, and traveled with Ultra Gypsy Dance Theater throughout the United States and Europe until Spring, 2008. In the past 3 years as co-director of Ultra Gypsy she has been a contributing force in the company’s dynamic choreography, and innovative costuming. As a performing member of Ultra Gypsy for over 7 years, her style is influenced by Jill Parker and inspired by the diversity of the San Francisco BayArea performance community.
Rose also performs with the Cyclecide Bike Rodeo and The Lifesize Mousetrap. When she is not performing, Rose manages Rosehips Designs, her costuming and clothing company. Her background in dance and movement includes Afro-Haitian, Brazilian, Afro-Arabic, West African, Contemporary dance, Fire dance, Pilates, Yoga, and multiple Middle Eastern dance forms. She has danced with Ultra Gypsy since 1999 and is an accredited teacher in the Jill Parker format.
Over 7 years of performing and teaching with Ultra Gypsy and her newest project, the Barbary Coast Shakedown, have given her unique insight to sharing the essentials of great technique, dynamic presence and the joy of this dance form.

Miss Leather San Diego Saturday March 8th!

This Saturday (!Tomorrow March 8th!) 6pm (Early evening) at Riches in San Diego, off University ave.

San Diego's Tribal Dancers (Us) are going on at 7pm aaaand, it doesn't stop there after we heat things up, umm... errrr... Need I say more than Miss Leather San Diego?? Yes Ladies in leather, or faux leather, whatever right...yea, they go on next. ;)

20.00 donation to attend the event, If you can't attend then just donate on your way out of Starbucks or Winesteals. Because all funds raised goes to sources helping teens off drugs and off the streets, that's a damn good cause. I was one of them, I was lucky but I cannot say the same for my friends of that time, most are dead and or in jail now because they did not find help, T.M.I. maybe? So think about that, and help us do something about it now that the option to help is out there and more available.

I know people that say they are fighting for causes but they are just complaining loudly, half ass recycling and waving fingers at S.U.V. drivers, not actually doing anything at all, that's not you right?? I'm jus sayin.....

As soon as I get more details I will post them here, in the meantime sell some old clothes or records and raise a few bucks for the kids. 20.00 and you can say ya did someting in 08. Hope to see you there and active for a cause!

Yoga bliss

I've been doing my best this year to decrease my blood pressure and heal from stress with saner living and lots of delicious yoga.

I just can't recommend Laura Creatrix's restorative Bliss Yoga classes at Yoganic highly enough. Thursdays at 8:30pm and Fridays at noon. She is so calming and grounding, I wish this class was available every single day. Perfect for healing and realignment.

Her new Yoga Trance Dance classes are on Friday evenings from 7:30 to 8:45. Starting with breath work and moving through asanas, she will guide you into a freeflowing trance dance in a darkened space where no one is watching.
