This workshop weekend will assist you in radically shifting bellydance posture and technique, and freeing up new movement pathways to support healthy, embodied dancers. We will discuss injury prevention and self-care; learn ways of protecting overused areas in bellydance--such as psoas, low back, and hips, and deepen our practices to stretch, strengthen, and activate the body in preparation for bellydance. A great foundation for any level dancer, of any style bellydance.

1-2: Pilates For Dancers Warm-Up (Aubre)
Learn basic Pilates principles and how to apply this work in creating a strong and stable body placement for dance. Pilates is also a great rehabilitation module for dancers.
2-4: Lower Quadrant: The Root of it All (back, hips, pelvis, sacrum & legs) (Aubre) From balance to stability and freeing the body for all the wonderful isolations of bellydance, Aubre will present exercises and techniques to understanding the kinetic chain and interconnected quality of the lower half. Including special attention to sacral stability while maintaining strong hip isolations.
4-6p: The Spine: The biomechanics of spinal stabilization, articulation, and extension/backbending, from both Yogic and Pilates perspectives. (Aubre & Deb.)

12-1: Core Yoga for Dancers Warm Up (Deb)
1-3: Upper Quadrant: The neglected area of Bellydance. (Deb)
Free up the neck/head, shoulders, spine, &sidebody to create that intoxicating look and feel of ridiculously slow, slinky bellydance; allow for sharper isolations; and create more fluid, articulated movements from the head to the fingertips. Focus will be on the importance and biomechanics of the shoulder girdle, and how it relates to everything you do in bellydance. This module will include lecture, experiential anatomy, and therapeutic yoga/somatic practice, with hands-on adjustments. All material will then be applied to bellydance posture, technique, and combos, with particular focus on arms, core, and ribcage.
3-4: Bellyrolls and Abs: Understanding and isolating the deeper core muscles for the smooth, fluid moves of bellyrolls and undulations. (Aubre)

I am so excited to finally be back in town for Sabrina's class at Cafe India tomorrow. I have really missed everyone while I've been gallivanting and studying and teaching.

I wanted to let everyone know that Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus will be at the Sports Arena tomorrow, so you might want to give yourself a little more time for the drive to and from class.

I just want to clear up any confusion. The session was suppose to start last wednesday April 1st. I was sick so I post poned until the 8th (yesterday). Many people didn't show up that I was expecting to, so I don't know if people were confused...

Saturday, April 4 Workshops:

"Layering 101"
12:30-2:30pm :: $35 per class or $60 for both pre-reg /$40 per class at door

Learn the basics and concepts in the art of layering. With the tools and knowledge you learn in this workshop you will be on the way to becoming a pro. The class will cover specific techniques to overcome the difficulties that arise when trying to layer, along with different drills to accompany the technique. At the end of class a short combination will be taught that includes layering, of course! Be prepared to challenge your brain and bring a notebook. When you leave the workshop I promise you will want to add a shimmy to everything you do.

"The Slow & Subtle"
3:00 - 5:00pm :: $35 per class or $60 for both pre-reg /$40 per class at door

This workshop will focus on slowing down and integrating the core to initiate those slow, gooey movements. The warm-up is yogalates based and will concentrate on core, balance, and strengthening exercises that will be applied to the dance form. In the workshop students will drill various slow movements focusing on the core and learn how making subtle changes to the simple movements translates to noticeable beauty. Students will also learn Steven's Atash Mayan stylized gooey combinations that can be used in an improvisational situation or in choreography.

Got Fangs? Come "get turned" at Gothla! ; )=

It's around the corner ladies and gents!

As many of you all know I will be vending at Gothla again so I hope you all saved your pennies for me this time ; )=

My pricing is pretty simple, it's $50 a fang, so if you want "Interviews" (they have four fangs) they would cost you $200. "Classics" (two fangs) are $100. You can't find cheaper custom fangs anywhere else. This is just a simple hobby/business for me so I only accept cash ; )

I will be making dental impressions at the event and your fangs would be completed and delivered within a week depending on how quickly you buy them from me. It's first come first serve guys! The process is pretty simple. The fitting or imprinting of your teeth for the casting would take about 15 minutes of your time. After that, the acrylic shaping, sculpting and final polishing would be done at my shop at home. Again, it can take 1 to 2 business days to complete depending on the type of fangs that are requested and a few more days for shipping/delivery... So about a week. Remember it's first come first serve!

I've been looking a LONG time and this is the deal of the century. Smaller ones are less expensive with designs.

Saturday, April 4 Workshops:

"Layering 101"
12:30-2:30pm :: $35 per class or $60 for both pre-reg /$40 per class at door
Learn the basics and concepts in the art of layering. With the tools and knowledge you learn in this workshop you will be on the way to becoming a pro. The class will cover specific techniques to overcome the difficulties that arise when trying to layer, along with different drills to accompany the technique. At the end of class a short combination will be taught that includes layering, of course! Be prepared to challenge your brain and bring a notebook. When you leave the workshop I promise you will want to add a shimmy to everything you do.

"The Slow & Subtle"
3:00 - 5:00pm :: $35 per class or $60 for both pre-reg /$40 per class at door
This workshop will focus on slowing down and integrating the core to initiate those slow, gooey movements. The warm-up is yogalates based and will concentrate on core, balance, and strengthening exercises that will be applied to the dance form. In the workshop students will drill various slow movements focusing on the core and learn how making subtle changes to the simple movements translates to noticeable beauty. Students will also learn Steven's Atash Mayan stylized gooey combinations that can be used in an improvisational situation or in choreography.

Sunday Culture Shock holds its Yearly Showcase Raine Steven and I are going to be there with a little number to help culture shock keep dance programs for kids alive. Though I will be out of town at the Tribal Massive intensive on the day of this event, I am rallying support for a new bellydance showcase in San Diego.

Please remember that your dance community can only be made up of the creative energy you are willing to invest in it.

Arabesque San Diego hopes that you will be interested in supporting the new bellydance showcase they are creating for you.

* The next Showcase will take place Sunday, 1 March 2009, at 1446 Front Street, Suite 101, San Diego, CA 92101, from 2 pm to 5 pm.
* For now we will be doing our Showcase on the first Sunday of each month.
* The Showcase will feature various styles: Belly Dancing, Hoop Dancing, Flamenco, Salsa, Tango, Hip Hop, and live music.
* On some Sundays we will also have a workshop.
* There will be some vending and a snack bar.
* There is no charge to attend the showcase. Donations, however, will be appreciated.
* Plenty of free parking!

More performers are needed for this event to survive!

* We have taken the first step, but the success of this showcase depends in large part on your participation and spreading the word.

"Sinuous Serpentine Stylizations"

Slinky and serpentine. Imagine moving like smoke through space. This workshop focuses on developing and maintaining the sinuous carriage and muscle control required to execute extremely slow and controlled movements. Learn the fundamentals of conditioning for achieving optimum muscle control and hyperextension. Heavy emphasis on conditioning and strength training required for extreme muscle control. Drills and simple combinations are broken down emphasizing smooth articulation and fluidity. We will expand the drills into short combinations emphasizing extreme muscle control culminating into a complete ultra slinky choreography. Workshop will emphasize level changes and moving through different planes of space alternating the pace from slow to even slower. Basic floor work will also be covered. **Yoga mat or knee pads are strongly encouraged.

"Shake It Like a Salt Shaker "
3:00 - 5:00pm :: $35 per class or $60 for both pre-reg /$40 per class at door

Isolations, posture, extension and building choreography: Learn the fundamentals of faster paced tribal fusion bellydance. Strong emphasis is placed on developing a correct posture, muscle conditioning and flexibility training. Sharp articulation emphasizing movement and rhythm. We will drill twists, locks, drops, squares, omis and shimmies working to develop the muscles in the lower abs and pelvic area to create crisp, strong hip articulation. We will then take it a step further and move on to drilling these movements within different planes of space, such as level changes and experimenting with variations on the left and right sides of the body. Special emphasis placed on drop turns and drop twists. Students will learn how to create combinations and link them into short choreographies. The goal is to give students the tools to more effectively help link movements together to create their own combinations and to ultimately create a very complete performance. We will also discuss the elements of good stage presence and methods to creating a very strong performance persona.

Elijah teaching @ Elevation 2009, April 17-19 in Denver w/Tribe Marrakech!

We are "super" excited to welcome the "fabulous" Elijah to the Denver area for Elevation 2009, on April 17-19.

Elevation 2009 is the 5th year of our "grand" yearly belly dance festival. It is held in the small "charming" Western town of Golden, CO, nestled down into a valley and up against the "majestic" Rocky Mountains, near Denver.

The event venue is across the street from our "eclectic" store/studio Paprika, where some of the smaller classes will be held.
There are also hotels in the next block.

A "beautiful" river runs through the heart of town, and the largest brewery in the world offers free beer just 2 blocks away! DID you hear that? FREE BEER!

There will be 3 full days of "exciting" classes, 2 "excellent" shows with pro sound, lights, DJ, and VJ.
The Fri night show is catered with a "marvelous" Middle Eastern buffet, and there will be attendee performances, and the Sat night show is for the teachers and a few "special" guests.

We hold our shows in a large club, and this really is one of the most FUN and "Super" events around. It's not an event where everyone is made to sit quietly in a theater and suffer through long and drawn out shows. We have fun and dance and laugh and cut up and have a few dranky-dranks. We've got an "superb" DJ of Indian decent from the Island of Trinidad that keeps us all jumping to his "energetic" Chutney Soca and Bangin Bhangra rhythms.

Saturday Jan 3rd the 12:30-2:00 Advanced combos and performance class will be moved to Cafe India. Drop in rate is 14.00 Class cards will be available for this class.

The class will go something like this.

ATS lead follow performance Practice

Technique drills

Tribal Fusion Improvisational Combos.

This is an advanced class, you must know American Tribal Style belly dance before attending this class.

Where can you learn ATS? American Tribal Style belly dance is instructed in my Monday 7:pm World beat center class and the Tuesday 6:30-7:30 Culture shock class.
You can also purchase the instructional DVDs from the Fat Chance Belly Dance website. I highly advise this as part of your Dance DVD collection.

This Saturday Arabesque festival in San Diego.

Saturday morning I am holding a 9am workshop teaching 2 possibly 3 fun NEW improvisational tribal fusion combos, the workshop will be held at the Arabesque bellydance competition festival, at the Scottish rite center in San Diego.

Also if anyone is interested in performing at the festival on Saturday let me know and I can get you a spot on the stage that day.

I will also be teaching at Culture shock the Advanced combos class 12:30-1:30, no you will not see the combos I am teaching in the workshop till next year so come to both, you will get World Beat Center perks if you attend the workshop hehehe...

Totally amazing here, a bit nippy but amazing. It is odd going from 80 to 20d's, my skin hates me right now.
The Tour has been hard work but worth every second of it, and I get to see Kami every day :)

This Saturday at Culture shock, New classes!!

At 9:30 am beginning Yoga asana Flow. 1 hour of delight :)

Then at 12:30 Advanced Tribal fusion combos. There will be a 10-15 minute bellydance performance Improvisation in every class that will include F.C.B.D. Techniques and combos intermixed with the combo you learn. So study up! ;)

We are now offering 5 classes at culture shock a week so it could be worth it for ya now, to get that card that brings the class fees down to 10 buckaroos per class! and for you die hards there is the unlimited three month cards. sheesh... I think I still have one on file.

Side note; What keeps the culture shock classes alive is 4 or more paying students in class at any one time, so for Start up classes please invite your friends to try it out, I will offer rewards at the World Beat center classes for your efforts.
Having three or more paid students in the culture shock classes will also allow the instructor (me) to be paid too, now that's incentive for me to stick around. Just thought id add that.

This workshop will focus on slowing down and integrating the core to initiate those slow, gooey movements. The warm-up is yogalates based and will concentrate on core, balance, and strengthening exercises that will be applied to the dance form. In the workshop students will drill various slow movements focusing on the core and learn how making subtle changes to the simple movements translates to noticeable beauty. Students will also learn Steven’s Atash Mayan stylized gooey combinations that can be used in an improvisational situation or in choreography.
